The Scarlet Club is my first full length thriller, with Mason Cooper, an ex-cop, who has just retired early to save his failing marriage. It is book two in the the trilogy and carries on from where Taking Natasha finished.

Before Mason has chance to enjoy the freedom from his previous role as a tough, no-nonsense detective, he is plunged into a life and death struggle to rescue his sixteen-year-old daughter from a gang of traffickers and a secret select club. He is assisted by a pretty East European girl whom he rescues from the traffickers in chapter one.

When deciding on just how to tell this story I agonised over whether or not to include scenes of the victim, Rosie, after she had been taken by the traffickers. Most movies of a similar theme tend to show the struggle to rescue the victim, which usually occurs before any real harm comes to her. This seemed to be an unwritten rule for older movies made in a time when good had to prevail at all costs.

However in the real world, that’s not what happens.

So I had a decision to make.

I did not want to glamourise, in any way, the horrific suffering that so many victims endure at the hands of traffickers, but I did not want to sanatise the story either. In the end I decided to include scenes with Rosie throughout the book but it was important to me to get the balance of these scenes right. Too much graffic content could make the book sleezy. Not enough description of her suffering glosses over the tragic elements of the story. So I set about writing the strory, no holds barred, but determined to get the balance just right. After completing the book, I believe it was the right decision, and feedback from readers has validated that decision.

It was also important to me to inject realism and to give the characters depth through both realistic dialogue and interior dialogue.

TAKING NATASHA is a FREE prequel novella (shorter book) that introduces the MASON COOPER series. It’s a powerful, gritty story covering the trafficking of Natasha, the pretty East European girl, you will meet in chapter one of The Scarlet Club. It deals with disturbing themes that are real life for so many young women and girls all over the world. It is available to download Free from Amazon.

I think it’s important to mention that, although both books are a work of fiction, the themes covered in Taking Natasha, The Scarlet Club and Innocent Girls are based on real life occurrances that thousands of women and girls have suffered. In fact, in the time it takes you to read this single page, another young girl or woman somewhere in Europe and the wider world will have been tricked, deceived, abducted, and forced into a life of sexual slavery. Please spare a thought for them.
